Dressage Book Description

Describing the basic anatomy and physiology of the horse, this book by an experienced veterinarian identifies widely-used incorrect training methods—especially in dressage—that can undermine a horse’s health and well-being. Starting with the question Who is responsible for this?

This Dressage book looks at breeders, breed associations, instructors, judges, riders, spectators, and the governing bodies of horse sports. The hyperflexion issue, the discussion shows, is that training affects horses both for good and for ill, and riders should reject any methods that cause pain or fail to respect the mental habits and physiological needs of their animals.

Dressage has been know since the ancient times as an exhibition of the skill of a rider in riding a horse, as well as controlled movements of the horse to the prompt commands of the rider. It takes into account the impulsion of a horse and its quick and controlled reaction to the commands and directions given by the rider so as to perform elegant moves. In order to do so, there are a certain set of features and qualities that the horse must possess so as to perform to the utmost of his abilities during the dressage.

Dressage Saddles

Since the ancient period, dressage has been known to be a sport or a competitive meet in which warriors, knights and riders had been participating with their horses, in order to exhibit their potential as riders, and also their horse’s concentration levels and strength to learn, throughout history. Dressage is known to be around since the time of ancient Greeks (since abut 2000 A.D), where Greek knights and warriors used to participate in dressages for dignity and valor, organized in huge dressage arenas, to train their horses and exhibit the skills of the battlefield. Since that time, dressage has evolved a lot and has transformed itself into an able and a skillful sport. Just like any other sport, dressage requires utmost preparation on the part of both the rider as well as the horse. The preparation for the dressage involves the use of the right type of accessories which prove to be comfortable for both, the horse as well as the rider. One such class of accessories is the dressage saddles.

Dressage saddles are a very important part of the preparation process for any kind of a dressage event. A general saddle is a seating accessory which is placed on the back of the horse and is used by the rider to mount on the horse. The purpose that a saddle solves in ridding a horse is that it provides a stable platform to the rider, so as to place his body on the horse and to ride the horse comfortably. The saddle must also provide some desirable shock absorbing functions so as to prevent the rider from dismounting off the horse owing to the jumps and jerks he receives during the ride. A dressage saddle is also a general saddle, with a few added features. First of all, dressage saddles have a deeper cut seats and flatter flaps, that are cut straight, as compared to the saddles generally used for riding horses. The reason for such features is that dressage requires a steady mount on the horse for the rider and a greater contact with the body of the horse. This is much more needed in dressage. The close contact is helpful for the efficient cueing and direction of the horse to the vims and fancies of the rider.

Dressage saddles can be found to be of various different types and makes, differing according to the manufacturer, material as well as the specific application they are being used for. One of the most popular and widely used classes of saddles is the dressage saddle of English make. The advantage that these saddles offer is that they are highly customizable. You can easily customize them according to your requirements like adding longer, additional flap etc. They are very safe and strong except only one drawback. The leather used foe making English Dressage Saddles is not of the highest quality. Apart from these, there are various types of saddles available from different makers, that provide you with good quality leather, more comfortable mounting facilities, greater grips as well as better customizations. It all depends upon what kind of a dressage saddle you require.

Dressage Arenas

Dressage has been used as a competitive meet in which warriors, knights and riders had been participating with their horses, in order to exhibit their potential as riders, and also their horse’s concentration levels and strength to learn, throughout history. Dressage is known to be around since the time of ancient Greeks (since abut 2000 A.D), where Greek warriors used to participate in dressages, organized in huge dressage arenas, to train their horses and exhibit the skills of the battlefield. Since that time, dressage has evolved a lot as a sport. It is now a test of the rider on how well he can bond with his horse, in order to make the horse perform to the maximum of its ability, both physically as well as mentally in the dressage arena.

Dressage arena is a kind of a stadium (similar in structure to a Colloseum), where the training of the horse as well as an exhibition of the acquired skills and control over the horse is exhibited by the rider as well as the horse. These arenas are generally observed to be of two sizes – standard and small. Each of these types of the dressage arenas are similar in the sense that there are certain positions, around the arena, that are denoted by the use of certain letters. These positions around the arena are used to signify where the various movements by the rider as well as his or her horse are to be performed.

Dressage takes place in the form of certain predefined levels. The introductory as well as the lower levels of the dressage are performed in arenas called small arenas. The dimensions of these small arenas are 20 m by 40 m that is; 66 x 131 ft. Small dressage arenas are also used in introductory tests of USDF, as well as USEF training level tests. The periphery of the arena is denoted by a series of letters from the English alphabet in the following order – A-K-E-H-C-M-B-F.The alphabet denotation starts from the point of entry, and progresses till the point of exit, in a clockwise direction. Certain letters are also used to mark various positions in the centre of the dressage arena. The denotation is such that if we move along the centre line of the dressage arena, the positions are denoted by D-X-G, from right to left. When Equine Canada and United States Dressage Federation, combined with each other in the year 2003, the use of small size arena for exhibiting dressage shows was discontinued.

On the other hand, a Standard Arena measures 20 m by 60 m in dimensions and is used in dressage testing of all kinds as well as eventing. The letter string used to denote various positions in a standard dressage arena are A-K-V-E-S-H-C-M-R-B-P-F, in the same order.
Dressage in its present day form is a competition between various riders and their horses, exhibiting the skill and the control in each case. Dressage has been known since the ancient time, dating back to about 2000 A.D, in the era of the ancient Greeks. The ancient Greek warriors used to train their horses in the skills and techniques crucial in the battlefield, and showcase the effect of such training on the horses, in exhibitions called dressages. Since that time, dressage has evolved from a showcase of strength power and tactic for the battlefield, to an exhibition of the command and control of the rider, to which the horse responds. It is held in huge dressage arenas designed for the purpose, under the watchful scrutiny of an able jury.

Apart from the physical strength and the level of skill, dressage also takes into account the mental strength as well as the concentration level of both the horse, as well as the rider. Thus, this fact makes the ambience of a dressage arena, all the more crucial. The ambience should be such that the horses as well as the rider are both charged up – the horse in order to perform to the optimum level of his ability and the rider so as to give fluent and healthy directions and commands to his horse, at the right instants of time. Thus, the music dressage music holds great value in a dressage, setting the feel of the event. The music being played in the dressage is crucial due to two major reasons; firstly, it should be such that each beat of it can provide the scope of performing a uniquely choreographed move, to the trainer, the rider as well as the horse. This increases the elegance of the choreographed dressage to a whole new level. This also in turn pushes the horse as well as its rider to perform to the best of their ability.Secondly, the music being played in a dressage gives the feel of what the theme of the dressage is all about, and vows the audience.

Dressage music has been an integral part of dressages, since the ancient times. In those times, when dressages used to be an exhibit of the tactical skills employed in the battle field at the part of the rider as well as the horse, the dressage music used to match the feel, with trumpets, drums and other percussion based instruments being played in the background. In the dressage arenas of the present day, the basic theme is always a calm and serene exhibit. Thus, the dressage music being played in the background must complement that. The dressage music of today involves a healthy mix of contemporary jazz, instrumental or sheer power, stressing on the equestrian feel and ambience. The use and mix of a variety of instruments like Spanish and acoustic Guitars, pianos and percussion based instruments makes the dressage music very pleasing on the ear. Such music transcends all the fear or the pressure of failure, and helps both the dressage horse as well as the rider concentrate on the performance and the exhibition of acquired skill only, and nothing else.oustic and Spanish guitar

In The Heart Of The Arena

Dressage is a French term that incorporates various competitions and activities, held in an arena involving horses for the mentioned purpose. Dressage involves horses doing various moves and motions, on the directions of the rider. Dressage has come up to the level of being a famous contemporary sport. Dressage is known to be around since the time of ancient Greeks (since abut 2000 A.D), where Greek warriors used to participate in dressages, organized in huge dressage arenas, to train their horses and exhibit the skills of the battle field. Dressage, being more than a sport, has now evolved as a test of the rider on how well he can bond with his horse, in order to make the horse perform to the maximum of its ability, both physically as well as mentally, in a dressage arena.

Dressage and performances in the dressage arena are centric about two different entities -the dressage horse as well as the rider of the horse. Thus, any dressage event in front of an able jury is actually a dressage test on the part of the dressage horse as well as the rider of the horse. A dressage test involves a jury comprising of the pros and critics of the sport, who judge the horse and the rider on certain preset parameters. Both the horse as well as its rider is expected to follow certain rules that in turn decide their performance in a dressage test.

On part of the dressage horse, the quality on which it is rated or scrutinized during a dressage test is the impulsion of the horse. Impulsion is a characteristic feature of a healthy and perfectly trained and attentive horse, suggesting its ability to use its lower limbs to the optimum level. It has been referred to as the pushing power or the thrust of a dressage horse, whose source is the innate desire of the horse to move forward, exalting energy, ease, commitment and determination. It should be realized that the running speed of the horse is neither a sources of impulsion nor related to it in any way. Laying stress on the speed of a dressage horse makes its movements look more flat rather than impulsive. There is a specific position in which a Dressage horse can exhibit impulsion. The posture requires the hind legs of the horse to be entangled or engaged, so that the forward portion of its body as well as its powerful back oozes out impulsion from it
Impulsion in a dressage horse depends a lot on the riding skills of the rider, during the dressage. Thus, another entity on which a dressage test scrutinizes a particular performance is the ability and execution of the rider. The rider is expected to make a nice rapport and a comfort level with the horse, so that it can give the horse, clear directions and commands in order to get the maximum out of it. The rider is judged on the elegance and ease with which he or she directs a dressage horse to perform a particular move. This is what constitutes a general dressage test.

Dressage is a commonly used term to sum up all the various activities of training a horse, in order to bring about an improvement in it’s natural instincts as well as willingness to perform and in doing so, prove it’s worth and potential as a horse that is suitable for riding purposes. Dressage is a French term that incorporates various competitions and activities, held in an arena involving horses for the mentioned purpose. As dressage involves horses doing various moves and motions, dressage is also commonly referred to as a “Horse Ballet”. When a dressage horse attains its peak performance, it reacts easily and immediately to the rider’s calls and directions. The major aim of a dressage session is to have the dressage horse attain its optimal performance and put up a show of its abilities in a skillful and effortless fashion.

A very important quality of a dressage horse and a parameter on which these horses are judged is known as impulsion. Impulsion is a characteristic feature of a healthy and perfectly trained and attentive horse. It has been referred to as the pushing power or the thrust of a dressage horse, whose source is the innate desire of the horse to move forward, exalting energy, ease, commitment and determination. It should be realized that the running speed of the horse is neither a sources of impulsion, nor related to it in any way. Laying stress on the speed of a dressage horse makes its movements look more flat rather than impulsive. There is a specific position in which a Dressage horse can exhibit impulsion. The posture requires the hind legs of the horse to be entangled or engaged, so that the forward portion of its body as well as its powerful back oozes out impulsion from it. The importance of impulsion for a dressage horse is in determining if the horse can fully utilize the power vested in its lower body or the hind limbs. Impulsion in a dressage horse depends a lot on the riding skills of the rider, during the dressage.

Another important factor that determines the ability to perform in dressage for a horse is its attitude. By attitude of a dressage horse, it is meant that the reaction of the horse to an obstacle during the dressage on the first instant. The attitude of an ideal dressage horse should be such that it should be able to cope up with the upcoming obstacles, without following its natural instinct of freezing out or fleeing the arena.

For an exceptional performance during the dressage, it is important that the horse participating in the dressage is both physically as well as mentally ready for it. Physical strength and appropriateness of the horse can be tested for before the dressage. In order to test the mental strength and train him accordingly, the horse should be acclimatized to the arena and warmed up properly. This is important because before the dressage, the horse resides in the stands and can be nervous if taken directly to the dressage. Here is where the bond between the dressage horse and the rider comes into play. The rider must accompany the dressage horse at all times before the dressage, so as to ensure that the horse feels comfortable in his company and does not panic. The successful carrying out of the dressage depends upon the dressage horse and it’s mental state to a great extent
